I’m a mom who loves to make delectable but non-time consuming meals. That includes baking. So, if you’re like me, you will love this bread recipe. I call it the lazy baked bread because you can pretty much make it in your sleep. It is one of the most simple and fastest way to make bread! I’ve used this recipe for about a year now. My husband and kiddies love it. I love it too because not only is it easy to make but appetizing too.
So, are you ready? Here it goes:
5 cups of High Grade flour
3 tbs dried yeast
2 cups of warm water
2 tbs of sugar (optional)
This is enough to feed our family of four for 2 – 3 days. Rarely do I add sugar to my baked bread. I’m quite happy with the first three ingredients. Look at that! only three ingredients required to make yummy fresh bread! My husband prefers it without the added sugar anyways.
Stage 1 – Pour 3 cups of flour into a big bowl, add the yeast, (and the sugar) create a well and then add the water, a cup at a time. Mix it all in. I normally get a very thick wet dough at the end of it.
Stage 2 – Pour the last two cups of flour on a clean surface, spread it out, create a little well. And then pour the wet dough on top. I then use my hands to gently bring in the flour and lightly massage it into the wet dough. Once the dough starts to feel dry and not so sticky, I get in to it a little more rough.
Stage 3 – Kneading. Fold, roll, slap. You can clinch your fist and press it down as you fold it. And you do this for about 4-5mins.
Stage 4 – Put it into a dry bowl, cover it and find a warm spot in the house to place the bowl for the dough to rise. I normally put mine in my hot water cupboard. I leave it there for 30min – 1hour.
Stage 5 – Bring it out, lightly spread some flour on a clear surface again and knead the dough to get all the air out, place it back in the bowl and let it rise some more for another 30 mins. But if you’re in a hurry, you can knead it and prepare it to go into the oven. I do this all the time. The bread still comes out nice.
Stage 6 – Turn on oven and set it to 180°C. Bake it for 20 – 25mis or until cooked and golden brown. You can bake it as a whole bread or break it up into buns (as shown above). I prefer the buns because my family loves snacking on them, especially when you microwave it the next day, slabbed with butter. Yummo!
Stage 7 (Optional) – If you don’t like hard or crispy edges, lay out a damp tea towel. Straight out of the oven, place the cooked bread on the damp towel and cover it. Keep it covered for 30min – 1hr. Your bread will be a lot softer.
If you want to be a little more creative, you can add ham and cheese to it, or whatever filling you like. It is primo.
And that’s it! I love this recipe because it is so easy, so fast and delicious. My husband gets very excited when he comes home from work and smells fresh bread. This recipe is perfect for big and young families. Not only is it frugal with spending but also with my time. For me, It’s nice to be able to make something (cheap with less time) that my family looks forward to.
