I’m the type of mom who loves family photos. I’m that person who goes into homes (invited of course) and invades their family albums and follow the trail of portraits on their wall until I can go no further. My family does annual family photos and we are yet to take one for the year 2016. I enjoy the dress ups, capturing growth and the research! Research? Yes, research. 🙂 I am all for it. To get the best outcome from a photo shoot, I recommend you look up some family photo ideas and then send it to your photographer. Normally before a photo session I like to do a little search online for ideas of different poses, scenery and props. Not entirely for the purposes of being a copy cat, well… sometimes. But I mainly look for ideas that will bring out the personalities of our family.
Like this one… This was one of the ideas I found online. Not necessarily the same pose, but we changed it up a little and made it our own.
Have you heard Beyonce sing the lyrics “Who run the world… girls, girls…” well… she was talking about our household (lol). This photo portrays our family dynamic. My husband is the only male in our home and is surrounded by three spirited (and sometimes forceful) females. Even outside in his garden, he is surrounded by moody female chickens. As you can see, we all like to flock to him, hang off him and have him carry us 🙂 I say, he is a pretty lucky guy.
Anyway… I’ve learnt that you can have a lot of fun while taking family photos. You don’t always have to take the generic family photos by being still and picture perfect. Nope, you can be like this awesome family… and be free, honest and down to earth. They look like they’re having so much fun!!!
I use to be very shy when it came to family photos. Having to position yourself perfectly and smile perfectly, it’s awkward and so uncomfortable, right? I think so. So how do we not be awkward and uncomfortable? You gotta be a little more loose, a little less perfect and a little more fun. Like this family below, the kids are allowed to be themselves, rather than being held down and forced to smile. The children enjoy it a lot more when photos are taken in an environment that is fun and entertaining. Sometimes our imperfect families create perfect photos.
Not only do I have to make things exciting for my daughters to get a smile, BUT I have to be a sideline cheerleader for my husband as well. Sometimes they make family photos feel like a chore. He complains and scratches his head, “do we really have to do this?”. Am I the only wife who deals with this kind of problem? surely not! Making the moments more personal and reminding him of the memories we are creating helps him to appreciate and enjoy the little few minutes or hours of the photo shoot. He is actually more photogenic than I.
Lastly, you don’t always have to capture your pretty faces. You can give some attention to your outfit and the props you choose to use. I mean, you didn’t take hours and days looking for the perfect outfit just to have the camera sit from the bust up, right? heck no. You get that camera to capture those cute new boots you bought, just for the photo shoot.
These are only a few ideas you can work off and absolutely make it your own. Taking beautiful photos is a must. But these ideas are to add extra body to your photo shoot. You know what I mean? Take family photos that fit your family, exposes your interests and display each family member’s personality. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
I normally visit my wonderful friend Pinterest for ideas, then I move to Google images, then Facebook. You will find all the photographers on Facebook. So, go do some browsing… find your perfect idea and make it yours!
